Shaun Sookoo’s Sustainability Efforts At Xavier School In Banjul, Gambia

Shaun Sookoo, CEO of Viomar’s Gift, is deeply committed to the transformative power of education. Recently, the non-profit arm of Viomar Holdings, had the honour of working on a crucial project with Xavier School in Banjul, Gambia. This initiative underscores Shaun’s dedication to supporting education in regions where state funding is insufficient.

In Gambia, levels of underfunding leaves many schools reliant on donations to operate. Xavier School has faced these challenges head-on, with incredibly dedicated staff sometimes going without pay to ensure that children’s education is not compromised. The school has historically struggled with financial instability, making it difficult to provide consistent educational opportunities.

Recognising the need for a sustainable solution, Viomar’s Gift, together with Avril Grant, worked closely with the school governors to identify ways to make the school self-sustaining. After extensive deliberation and financial planning, it was decided to invest in two key revenue-generating facilities.  Firstly, a printing facility that will both serve Xavier School directly, in addition to becoming available to neighbouring schools and businesses, creating a steady stream of income.  Secondly, a hall with a stage that can be rented out for functions and events, providing another reliable revenue source. These facilities are designed to supplement the nominal school fees and ensure the school’s financial stability.

Shaun Sookoo, Viomar’s Gift CEO explained that the organisation has donated the necessary funds to build these facilities, marking a significant milestone for Xavier School. For the first time since its inception, it is now fully self-sustaining. This achievement guarantees that future generations will have access to uninterrupted, quality education.

Reflecting on the project, Shaun Sookoo commented, “In many parts of the world, including our own, we seldom worry about schools closing due to lack of funds or teachers going unpaid. The resilience and dedication of the staff at Xavier School is truly inspirational, and their commitment ensures that the children of Banjul receive the education they deserve.”

Shaun’s involvement in this project has been profoundly rewarding and has highlighted how much we often take for granted. The project has reinforced his belief in the importance of supporting educational initiatives that create lasting impact. Viomar’s Gift remains committed to fostering self-sustaining educational environments, contributing to the development and stability of communities around the world.
